Meet the Team
Owner: Michael Liang
Michael has been growing food for most of his adult life, though only recently made the leap from maintaining a kitchen garden to building a farm business. He’s an avid home cook and created Happy Kitchen Farm in part to increase the varieties of culinary ingredients in Tacoma, WA. Prior to farming, he worked with public land agencies for more than a decade and also led a nonprofit program for local creative entrepreneurs. With a formal art school training and a background in education, he views Happy Kitchen Farm as a combination of all his experiences, skills, and interests.
During this transition to farming, Michael is also available for consulting, facilitation, and other professional services for nonprofits and public sector organizations.
Favorite herbs: scallions and dill (perhaps a nod to his Chinese and Polish heritage)
Farm Assistants: Mark & Archie
Michael’s husband, Mark, and dog, Archie, are regular fixtures at Happy Kitchen Farm. Mark was the first supporter of Michael’s farm dreams and is always willing to play taste tester for any new recipes. Archie is happy to have any extra excuses to lay outside in the sun or steal raspberries while his dads aren’t looking.
Mark’s favorite herb: cilantro
Archie’s favorite herb: not cilantro
Composters and Tillers: Middle Child, Black Beak, Blondie, Domino, Red
Michael and Mark introduced a small flock of backyard chickens in 2024 and are continually grateful for the daily supply of fresh eggs. Equally important, the hens provide a source of manure for composting and actively till and weed any new garden beds.
Favorite herbs: the leftover roots from the microgreen trays. Yum!
